The Descenders:
a cross-country mountain bike team for grades 6-12.
That means…
Cross-country is a specific form of cycling and requires a broad range of skills to ride up and down mountain bike trails. Team members will develop both technical skills and improve their fitness through cross-country riding. Our season begins in July and culminates in four optional races, plus a State Championship in September and October.
Now, with that out of the way, what are we really about? We're a team where we meet each other exactly where we're at. No bravado. Everyone is welcome. Everyone rides. We believe that friendship, building character, and rising to challenges are lifetime pursuits ---and we believe there is no better place for this than on a bike.
You may have noticed that racing is optional. It's true. We love racing, but we also know that it's not for everyone nor is it the point of what we do. Our point is rising to challenges, which looks a little different for each student-athlete. Performance, simple movement, adventure, and/or friendship---all worthwhile challenges and we are all in to help make it happen.
Our team is a member of the Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League, which is a league of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).

A word about Milo.
If you are new to the Descenders’ community, you may be wondering about our mascot, Milo. Our team is a nod to the Descendents (Descenders/Descendents—see what we did there?), a punk band that formed in the late 1970s and continues on to this day. The lead singer is Milo Aukerman, who is not only a musician and writer of raw and oftentimes silly lyrics but a research molecular biologist. His caricature serves as the logo for the band and our team, as it is a celebration of grit and authenticity. We are never one thing, especially in our youth, and we are here to celebrate it all.
Our Sponsors.
We are honored to be sponsored by The Bike Peddler and Venti’s Cafe.
